SoundCheck: Interior Freelancer Symposium

Presented by the Vancouver Musicians' Association in partnership with Heritage Canada, the Symposium is free and open to all musicians and those interested in learning more about the music industry.

All events will take place at the Royal Anne Hotel in Kelowna, BC.


Schedule: Day One - Tuesday, March 14th, 2023

9:15 - 9:30 AM Welcome and Introduction

9:30 AM - 12:00 PM Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workshop

INCLUSIVE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES presented by Elevate Inclusion Strategies – Natasha Tony, CEO

Inclusive Creative Industries is for participants who are interested in examining equity and inclusion concepts to support inclusive practices within the current culture shift. Through facilitated peer group discussion this session identifies the impacts of discrimination and unconscious bias, cultural awareness principles and inclusive best practices. An exploration of allyship interventions and conflict strategies will round out the discussion on building a culture of accountability.

1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Songwriter's Circle

Join local singer/songwriters as they discuss their craft and answer
questions about songwriting.

Dusty Kelly, Executive Director, Toronto Musicians Association will lead a lively round table of professional musicians. Hear how they bring their very best selves to every performance.

4:45 PM - 5:45 PM Grant Writing Workshop with Joseph Bardsley, member of Creative BC's Music Team

Are you a musician interested in learning more about the grant landscape? Curious how to frame your project or idea, and what funding sources might be inclined to support it? Interested in learning more about how government funding, foundation philanthropy, and other channels provide the basis for support for projects of all sizes across the country? Bring your ideas about grants, your raw project ideas, and your curiosities about how to fashion a winning proposal to this session. All questions are welcome!

Canadian Federation of Musicians’ Executive Director Liana White will present everything you need to know about applying for a US work visa. Come with your paperwork!

11:15 AM - 12:15 PM: Royalties and Performance Rights - There is Money in Music.

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM: Is That Cable Plugged in Safely?  With Will Heller, Actsafe Performing Arts and Live Events.

This will be a highly interactive workshop - you will learn to identify hazards on stage and backstage, roles and responsibilities, and how to perform a safety inspection.

3:00 - 3:15 PM: Break

3:15 PM - 4:15 PM: Recording contracts

Sometimes the paperwork can seem overwhelming. This workshop led by Liana White, Executive Director, CFM and Rosalyn Dennett, Folk Music Ontario, who will show you how to navigate the paperwork and maximize the future earnings on your recording contracts.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Getting the Gig

A conversation with contractors, booking agents, and casting agents.
